When Husayn rode forth,

The King, bereft, alone.

Sakina brushed dust,
From our torn cloaks' fold.

Bent low we stood,
Our necks bowed, forlorn, controlled.

No refuge then we knew,
Only whispers of dreams.
His valiant brother fell,
Beneath the sun's harsh beams.
