Lyrics of O Aashadh Ke Pahle Baadal - ओ आषाढ़ के पहले बादल
o aashadh ke pahle badal o nabh ke kajal
virahi jano ke karun ashru jal ruk ja re ek pal
dur dur mera desh jahan bikharaye kesh
birahan ka banaye bhesh
piya meri videsh kaise kate kalesh use dena mera sandesh
o aashadh ke pahle badal
ja re ja o megh o mere dukh ke sathi
chal aise jo magan maad me chale hathi
mand pawan aur baye chatak bol raha hai
bandh katar baguliyo ka dal dol raha hai
raaj hans bhi udate hai panko ko tane
mitar wida ke samay ho rahe sakul suhane
o aasshadh ke pahle badal
jate jate tumhe marg me milega malav desh
jaha mohini malaniyo ka madhur manohar wesh
meghawa jhar jhar lage barsan
meghawa jhar jhar lage barsan jaye kaha
tum to rahe pardeshan barsan
tum to rahe pardeshan barsan
hum tumre darshn ko tarsan
prit lagi tumhri o ran chhan
prit lagi tumhri o ran chhan
meghawa jhar jhar lage barsan
meghawa jhar jhar lage barsan
aage tumko mitr milegi kurkchhetr ki bhumi vishal
mahabharat ke mahayudh ki jaha jali thi ek din jwal
koti koti jaha bars pade the bipudal pe arjun ke baan
kamal dalo pe barse jyo teri barkha ke amrit baan
mat mar mat mar bade barkha ke baan
mat mar mat mar bade barkha ke baan
gore gal huye lal papi kahan mera man
mat mar mat mar bade barkha ke baan
mat mar mat mar bade barkha ke baan
sanan sana pawan bole jhanan jhanan jhanjhar bole
jhan jhanan jhan jhanan bole
kajar bindiya mere bhige bhige re nanhi si jaan
bhige re nanhi si jaan
mat mar mat mar bade barkha ke baan
mat mar mat mar bade barkha ke baan
basant bita barkha aai ab to bir ki rah dekh
mitawa ang lagat hai mere
lipat lipat ras let haye main kaya karu
mat mar mat mar bade barkha ke baan
mat mar mat mar bade barkha ke baan
chal aage himshikharo par jaha bans ke vriksh mahan
jinke tan ko chhu kar chhede pawan hathila mithi tan
jinki tan me tam mila kar gati hai kinnariya gan
us sangit ke sat saraj to jage pashupati nath mahan
om namah shiwaye om namah shiwaye namah shiwaye
sar chandr dhari chandr siro dhari
mahadev jay mahadev jay mahadev jay mahadev jay
gale mund ki mala ti hoye mrig khal
gale mund ki mala ti hoye mrig khal
har har mahadev har har mahadev
har har mahadev har har mahadev
dur dekh alaka puri jaha meri priy nar
khuki hui liye birah ka bhar
o tujhe meri do ankhiya bar bar pukar rahi
birah me ro ro tare aanshuo ki aarati
tum base pardesh pritam paran bhi sang le gaye
kya hua apradh jo badale me ye dukh de sukh le gaye
jag lage angar sa sindur nain sanwar ke

Poetic Translation - Lyrics of O Aashadh Ke Pahle Baadal - ओ आषाढ़ के पहले बादल
O first cloud of Ashadh, ink of the sky,
pause, O moment, for the tear-soaked eye
of lovers, aching, adrift and apart.
My homeland lies far, my hair torn apart,
a lonely form, a lover's guise I wear.
My beloved, abroad, how can she bear
this pain? Oh, carry her my plea,
O first cloud of Ashadh, carry my plea.
Go forth, O cloud, companion of my pain,
move with the joy of an elephant's train,
with gentle winds and Chatak's cry,
with cranes in rows, as they drift on high.
The royal swans take flight, wings spread wide,
friends depart, as the moments subside.
O first cloud of Ashadh, know this,
on your journey, the Malav land you'll kiss,
where maidens of grace, their beauty will unfold.
The clouds pour down, a weeping release,
the clouds pour down, bring her my peace.
You remain afar, in a distant land,
while I yearn to see your face, your hand.
My love for you, a burning brand,
my love for you, in this foreign strand.
The clouds pour down, a weeping release,
the clouds pour down, bring her my peace.
Ahead, friend, you'll find Kurukshetra's vast ground,
where once the flames of the Mahabharata did resound.
Where millions of arrows flew, from Arjuna's bow,
as your rain's nectar on lotus petals bestow.
Do not strike, do not strike with your torrential rain,
do not strike, do not strike with your torrential rain,
my cheeks turn red, O tormentor, hear my plea,
do not strike, do not strike with your torrential rain,
do not strike, do not strike with your torrential rain.
The wind whispers, the anklets chime,
The wind whispers, the anklets chime,
My kohl-lined eyes, my small being weeps and sighs,
my small being weeps and sighs,
Do not strike, do not strike with your torrential rain,
Do not strike, do not strike with your torrential rain,
Spring has passed, the rains now arrive, look for her, I pray,
Beloved, cling to me, in this longing I sway,
embracing the nectar, what can I do?
Do not strike, do not strike with your torrential rain,
Do not strike, do not strike with your torrential rain.
Then to the snow-peaks, where bamboo trees reside,
their bodies touched by winds of stubborn pride,
whose song the Kinnaris sing along,
and in that melody, Shiva's seven notes prolong.
Om Namah Shivaya, Om Namah Shivaya, Namah Shivaya,
The moon-crowned, the moon-crowned,
Mahadev, victory to Mahadev, victory to Mahadev, victory to Mahadev,
With skulls around my neck, wearing a deer skin,
With skulls around my neck, wearing a deer skin,
Har Har Mahadev, Har Har Mahadev,
Har Har Mahadev, Har Har Mahadev.
Look afar, to Alkapuri, where my beloved waits,
bowed low, burdened by the weight of hate.
Come, my eyes call out to you, time and again,
weeping in separation, in tears of pain.
You dwell abroad, love, you took my soul with you,
what wrong have I done, for this grief in lieu,
the world burns like fire, adorned with vermilion,
my eyes call out to you, time and again.

one of Kalidasa's most popular poem "Meghaduam" with 111 stanzas.
Describing how King Kubera (from central India) trying to send message thru
northward cloud to his wife in (north of India) Himalaya. It shows the
knowledge on meteorology. "mat maar mat maar kahi brakha ke var" by Lata is
just glorifying the dance in moonson season. Just supurb!

This song reminds me of another song from Meghdoot (1945) by
Jagmohan, namely,'O varsha ke pahle badal'.Both are nostalgic gems from an
era which seems lost in the mists of times."The sweetest songs are those
which are sad". A Yaksha had been exiled by Kuber (the king of Yakshas) to
Vindhyachal mountains. At the onset of the rainy season he requests a cloud
to carry his reassuring message to his lovelorn wife in Alkapuri. He gives
details of the route to Alkapuri to the cloud .
