Now give the answer, let it ring,
Take the knee, the truth to sing.
Why be a sage, a lonely ape?
A tiny bowl, or ocean's drape?
Why be a sage, a foolish clown?

When youth was here, no eye would meet,
And now in age, the hearts retreat.
With knees bent low, and nose held near,
The eyes now see, through glasses clear.

Now tell the truth, and speak your mind,
Or eat the dung, of humankind.
Once, at a friend's, I thought to find,

The mother seen, the sister's show,
The sister-in-law, a graceful thing,
But who has seen, the widow's swing?
