I think he sings his best when without any pressure at his studios or his
concerts! same thing happened at Oscar! I am a HUGE ARR fan, and maybe
thats why I expect so much more from him.. but it was nice to hear him sing

Do agree with you. it is not always the music but also the voice and the
pronunciation of the words. The songs many times are let down by the wrong
pronunciation. like asking Nelly to sing a Hindi song or a tamil song..

The variations he made are really nice esp. the charanams; like ' kal ki
kis ko khabar..' and ' tum ko apni kasam..' and some words have
beauutifully gone nascal.. but any ways rahman's soaring vocals compensate
it for all.. this is the most historic tv shows in indian television
