I believe the plot of the movie was set in the US, more specifically - New York. As an aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and the racial-religious profiling that took after that. It would have been foolish to set such a movie in Japan or Sweden ..or in India!! India got lots of places for shooting..90-95% of the Bollywood movies are shot in India itself.
