the tune is based on a folk song from u p often rendered by thumri and dadra singers. nimbuwa tale dola rakh de musafir. s d burman's genius was to find beautiful folk tunes, especially from bengal, and base his compositions on them.

you can hear sudha malhotra sing the original song beautifully on youtube. i think its from an old LP. i have heard other thumri singers sing it too, hiradevi mishra if memory serves me right.

'ab ke baras' is perhaps one of the finest songs of Asha, Burman ND Shailendra . The sentiments immersed in the lyrics are simply matchless, The style it has been composed with most appropriate instrumentations (particularly sarangi) and singing with heart, makes the melody heart-throbbing and matchless. I salute all three maestros!!!
